Ryan Smitham was raised in the forested foothills of the Rocky Mountains near the hamlet of Bragg Creek, Alberta. He explores a wide range of concepts such as violent conflict, environmental degradation and the life cycle of materials. Ryan often demonstrates an affection for the wisdom and beauty of nature through the use of organic pattern/materials, gravity, chaos and the effects of time.
Smitham received an M.F.A. from the Pratt Institute (Brooklyn, New York) in 2013, and a B.F.A. and B.Ed. from the University of Lethbridge (Lethbridge, Alberta) in 2003 and 2005 respectively. His work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Canada and the United States. Ryan currently teaches Sculpture at the Alberta College of Art +Design and Visual Art / New Media at Foundations for the Future Charter Academy in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
